Heather Gowans Counselling

A safe space for you

“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”

Carl Rogers

A BIT ABOUT THERAPY from me and a client

One of the most important parts of counselling is the relationship between the client and the counsellor. I believe in counselling. I have had my own counselling. I practice in person-centered counselling. I will not tell you what to do but will listen and we will work together to help you get to where you want to be. A session will last 50 mins and is usually once a week but we can work out the correct frequency of sessions to suit you.

When I started seeing Heather I was tormented by past traumatic events. I felt vulnerable and
frightened. But my counselling sessions with her put me back in control. She couldn’t change what
had happened to me, but she challenged me to see things from a different perspective and that
helped me to manage the feelings and symptoms that I was experiencing. My counselling sessions
felt safe and comfortable, and I found that I could say things to Heather that I had never talked
about before. Each session was my time, I decided what I needed to face and Heather was there to
support me. After my last session with her, life felt full of possibilities again, my self esteem had
improved and I have been able to move forward.
